In recognition of Women鈥檚 History Month, 91直播 will host a free public lecture sponsored by the Presidential Initiative on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Dr. Jessica Scott will serve as guest speaker for the 7 p.m. March 28 event in Myles Center for the Arts.
Scott, an associate professor of gender studies at West Virginia Wesleyan College, will deliver the talk titled 鈥淲omen鈥檚 History Does Not Have to be Women鈥檚 Future: Inclusionary Models of Gender Can Save Girls鈥 Lives.鈥
鈥淭he fight for equity and civil rights for women in the U.S. continues as we acknowledge the accomplishments, past and present, of women including in the political arena, STEM and as social justice organizers,鈥 said 91直播 Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Laurie Goux. 鈥淲e learn that equity is a must for inclusion to occur. In her book, 鈥榃e Should All Be Feminists,鈥 Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie states, 鈥楾he problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are.鈥欌
In addition to teaching, Scott conducts research focusing on sexuality and place. Her current project is a monograph called 鈥淗ome is Where Your Politics Are,鈥 based on her doctoral research. She is also a children’s book author, having published her first children’s book, 鈥淢iss Penelope Thundertoes Changes Her Mind.鈥
